Manchester United deservedly earned a point at Stamford Bridge on Saturday night. Casemiro scored his first goal for the club in extra time to give the Reds a 1-1 draw with Chelsea.
Compared to the draw against Brentford, Chelsea made two of the four changes in attack are Raheem Sterling and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang back. Thiago Silva and Ben Chilwell are back in the starting line-up, as Kalidou Koulibaly suffered a minor knee problem at the end of the last game.
Chelsea, which has not lost in eight Premier League home games, hosts a team that has won five of its last six away games in all competitions, although it has had a poor recent record in London, having lost its last three league games in the capital.
The visitors dominated the game, but went down three minutes from the end when Jorginho missed from the penalty spot after Scott McTominay had brought down Chelsea striker Armando Broia inside the box.
It would have been a harsh result for the Reds, but it was not to be: United fought back in extra time and scored deservedly. Casemiro received the ball from Luke Shaw on the left and the Brazilian’s brilliant header flew past Kepa Arizabalaga – over the crossbar – and eventually flew over the line, securing the equalizer.
United dictated the pace in the opening minutes, dominating in midfield and putting pressure on their opponents when they lost possession of the ball. There was almost something when Shaw picked up the ball after Christian Eriksen’s pass. The left-back drove deep into the Chelsea penalty area and shot at goal, but the ball just missed the post.
From then on, United’s attack continued unabated. Anthony forced Kepa to save his first goal of the match: he broke through on the right flank and shot the ball with his left foot, but the Spaniard dived low to stop it.
After 30 minutes, the Reds had 62 percent ball possession and were in complete control of the game. Chelsea failed to get a single shot on goal. However, despite the impressive numbers, Erik Ten Hague’s boys failed to make any meaningful attempts on goal.
But that almost changed when Marcus Rashford entered the box after a counterattack and sent the ball into the net from a tight angle. Soon after, Anthony centered the ball for Jaden Sancho, but the goalkeeper easily parried his shot.
Chelsea came close to taking the lead just before the end of the first half. Mason Mount found Raheem Stirling on the outside, but Casemiro’s shot from close range and Dalot’s pressure on Aubameyang made the Blues miss the chance.
United responded immediately when Bruno Fernandez got ahead of his man and found an excellent pass for Anthony, but the Brazilian winger failed to capitalize on his chance, hitting the ball with a weak right.
At the start of the second half, Chelsea continued to look for the extra concentration they needed in attack.
Sterling, who wanted to score his first goal for Man United with his 24th attempt, regretted at the start of the second half that he had passed the ball to a teammate instead of sending it into the net. It didn’t help.
However, the Blues kept up the pressure on their opponents, who were losing Varane to injury at the time. Our midfield, where Trevoh Chalobah was excellent, was more solid than in the first half against the Red Devils.
Graham Potter’s boys stepped up with greater intensity and had more possession early in the first half, but there was a lack of sharp chances on both sides.
After an hour of play, United suffered a major blow when Raphael Varane suffered a serious injury that forced the Frenchman off the field. Our number 19 was clearly stressed and although he managed to leave, he did so with tears in his eyes when he was replaced by Victor Lindelof.
In the 72nd minute the Blues came close to scoring when Trevo Chalobah hit the crossbar with his header.
With three minutes left in the game, it looked like the hosts had secured the victory when McTominay brought down substitute Broia in the penalty area. Jorginho, Chelsea’s main penalty taker, rose to the occasion and sent De Hea wide.
United, however, failed to emerge victorious from the situation. With six minutes left in extra time, Shaw broke through on the left and headed the ball into the box. Casemiro centered and when Kepa caught the ball, it bounced off the crossbar and over the line and the Brazilian celebrated his first goal with the Reds in euphoria.
