Ajax Amsterdam booked their place in the Europa League after beating Rangers 3-1 at Ibrox on Tuesday, pushing the Scottish club further into the Champions League.
Ajax finished third in Group A behind Napoli and Liverpool and will compete in the Europa League play-offs, while Rangers finished last after losing all six of their group stage games. Scotland were the first problem and had the worst result of the three. . a decade of competition in the groups of the Champions League.
Steven Berghuis gave Ajax the lead with a low strike in the fourth minute and Mohammed Qudous added a second in the 29th minute.
Rangers captain James Tavernier scored from the penalty spot four minutes later to grab his second goal of the group stage, but Ajax restored their two-goal lead two minutes later through teenage substitute Francisco Conceicao.
Rangers, who needed to win by five goals to beat Ajax and book their place in the Europa League, took the lead at half-time.
They conceded 22 goals in six group games with a goal difference of minus 20, surpassing Dinamo Zagreb’s previous worst group record in 2011/12 when they lost all six games with a goal difference of minus 2.
Czech club Viktoria Plzen have also lost all six of their matches this season with a goal difference of -19 after losing 4-2 at home to Barcelona on Tuesday.
